HLLC Focus Groups

Thank you for agreeing to participate in a HLLC Focus Group Today. This page provides details about all of the activities you will be participating in today. Please let us know if you have any questions!

Step #1: Install the Chrome Timer

 

Using the Chrome Browser, navigate to the following website and install the Timer add-in: Timer Tool

 

Tips:

  • You will use this timer to track how long it takes you to complete each search. 
  • Remember to start the Stopwatch feature of this tool for each search. You will have 5 timings for the article searches in Lightning Search, 5 in Sci Hub, and 5 in the Hirons Library Legacy Catalogue. 
  • Reset the timer before starting each new search.

Step #2: Search for books using the Hirons Library Legacy Catalogue

Step #3: Search Lightning Search for Articles

First, you will search using Lightning Search. To access Lightning Search, follow these steps: 

  1. Navigate to Campus Web (using Chrome) and login: http://campusweb.gbc.edu
  2. From the top navigation bar, choose Library & Learning Center
  3. From the left side bar, choose HLLC Services
  4. Click the Library Services choice from the center page menu
  5. Click the link for Search the Databases here!
  6. Turn on the timer for the Chrome extension (make sure to use Stopwatch!)
  7. Begin your search. 

Tip! Remember to start a new Stopwatch timer for each search!

Step #4: Search Sci-Hub for Articles

Use the same worksheet from the previous activity. This time you will be using the website Sci Hub to attempt to find the same articles. 

Follow these steps to search Sci Hub: 

  1. Navigate in Chrome to https://sci-hub.tw/ or to https://sci-hub.se/ 
  2. Turn on the Chrome timer before you begin your search. 
  3. Search in Sci Hub for each article

Tip: Remember to use the timer for each search! Complete the worksheet with the requested data.
