Foreword
We, the class of 1962, take this opportunity to say farewell. We cannot foresee the future, but we know the things we have learned will serve to guide us throughout the years ahead. To those who have given their help in character building as well as scholastic attainment, we are grateful.
Goldey Beacom graduates seek careers as typists, secretaries, and accountants. Some find that many opportunities other than business opportunities are available to them upon graduation.
It is true that some students are attending this school to gain knowledge about the business world even though their vocational aims are to become teachers, lawyers, or even scientists or agriculturists. One of the purposes of this school is to more fully acquaint the student with the many opportunities that like in the business field. It gives to all students a glimpse of the business scene and the basic characteristics of American commerce that are essential to an understanding of business in general.
Embarking on our chosen careers, we promise to endeavor to reflect the excellent training which has been gained during these past months at Goldey Beacom.
We are proud to present the first edition of our yearbook, Crossroads. Much work has gone into its production and layout. We sincerely hope that crossroads will become a permanent part of Goldey Beacom. Many thanks to the solicitors, patrons, and members of the student body and faculty who made this yearbook a reality.

Goldey Beacom School of Business is the consolidation of Goldey College, founded in 1886 by the late H.S. Goldey, and Beacom College, founded in 1900 by W.H. Beacom. Goldey College originated in one room of the Wilmington Institute Free Library at Eighth and Market Streets. In 1916 it was moved to the Goldey Building at Ninth and Tatnall Streets. Beacom College, known as the Wilmington Business School, was originally located at One East Ninth Street until 1929 when it was moved to the Beacom Building at Tenth and Jefferson Streets.
W.E. Douglas, who succeeded H.S. Goldey as president of Goldey College, completed fifty-two years of service while J.W. Hirons, who followed W.H. Beacom as president of Beacom College, served the college for forty-two years. In 1951, the year of the consolidation, Jay W. Miller was elected president of Goldey Beacom School of Business at Tenth and Jefferson Streets.

Faculty
Goldey Beacom is fortunate in maintaining a fine teaching staff. Each member of the staff has been well trained to perform the duties of his or her assignment. In addition to being proficient, many of them have received state and national honors.
By the time a student completes his course at Goldey Beacom, he has been associated with most of the teachers; and he knows, through his own experience, that the teachers do everything possible to aid him in furthering his education.

Activities

Rockford Park
We started off our year’s activities with a picnic at Rockford Park. Classes were dismissed at 12:30 and we went to the Park for lunch and an afternoon full of activities. Bus transportation was provided by the school. When students started to arrive, hot dogs started to cook, soda was drunk, and potato chips and pretzels were eaten. As food was being consumed, others were consuming energy by playing active games. Some played football and volleyball white others tried watermelon with their noses, eat pie without using their hands, and throw eggs without breaking them. Many new friends were made and old acquaintances renewed.
Page 39

The highlight of the full activities was a semi-formal dance held in the Gold Ballroom of the Hotel du Pont. The date was Friday the thirteenth, but is turned out to be lucky thirteen, but it turned out to be lucky thirteen from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. with good music for dancing supplied by Manny Klein’s Orchestra. The Gold Ballroom is considered by most Wilmingtonians to be the finest dance hall in the area. With its high ceiling, chandelier, and gold curtains, the formal dance atmosphere is in the air. Toward the end of the dance, however, many students shed their shoes and danced to the Mexican Hat Dance and the Twist.

Christmas Formal 1961
As the gay, festive holiday season drew near, Goldey Beacom students were preparing for the Christmas Formal. Included in these preparations was the selection of Miss Noel. Six girls were nominated; and from these six, the student body chose the queen.
Preparations continued and finally the night arrived. Christmas decorations adorned the dance floor; everyone was dressed in his best and having a grand time. The tension mounted as the crowd gathered to see and hear Mr. L. Kucharczu present the court which consisted of Trudy Ware, escorted by William Heanre; Anne Balderston, Thomas Simpers; Kathy Kucharczuk, Larry Mouer; Carole Willis, Ronald Pedrick; and Dottie Horvat, John Ryan. Gracefully these girls walked forward with their escorts. At last we knew who the queen was as Caryll Holtzman walked forward to be crowned “Miss Noel of 1961” by Mrs. Catherine Nicholson. This was the highlight of a fabulous evening in which all thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

Basketball
Bottom Left Picture: Nick Summa, our fabulous backcourt man, takes a Stevens rebound. Notice that hip action!
Basketball, which is the major sport at Goldey Beacom, is sponsored by the school for men students.
The outlook was skeptical for this year with only two experienced varsity players returning for Goldey Beacom. The excellent record complied by the squads over the past several years has ranked Goldey in a high position among the independent colleges. Over the past six years, our team has won 90 games and lost only 20 and has a record of 33 straight wins on our own home court over a four-year period.
Smaller than most of the opposing teams, the “Gee Bees” displayed hustle, spirit, determination, and extra effort – qualities which build teams of championship caliber. Worked-out plays executed with pin-point accuracy helped put the GB basketeers far out in front in competition with teams from colleges in Washington, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. There was evidence of true team effort in well-coordinated games.
Much credit must go to coaches Harry “Boots” Reed and Earl Burns for turning a rather small team into a powerhouse of energy. Senior Captain Larry Lauver and Fred Venish, the holdovers from last year’s club, teamed up with Brian Young, Steve Engler, and Al Hannum to form the nucleus of a winning club.
Page 48
Top Left Picture: Fred Venish, one of our varsity players, drives through the Stevens defense for an easy lay up.
Nick Summa, one of the finest backcourt men and high scorers that Goldey Beacom has had in many years, is considered the man to lead our complete offensive team. With Nick’s constant hustling, one can be sure Goldey will have excitement, if not victory, at each game. One great quality Nick possesses is the ability to dribble the ball while running circles around his many defensive opponents.
Height is one factor that coaches desire to have on their teams. Many teams have proved it is not needed in order to have a winning season. Goldey Beacom, for the first time, had a player, Frank Talley, who is 6 feet 6 inches. With this factor in our favor, Goldey could call upon Frank to give his assistance. But then, many of our less tall players played hard and proved that they could be just as powerful as those players with height. The other members of the team are Jack Conrad, Bobby Cirillo, Jerry Fahey, Bob Hoebee, Dennis Sanger, and Dick Abplanalp.
All of our players have improved tremendously this season. Two standouts are Bill Rutherford and Tom McInerney. At the time our yearbook went to press, a transfer student was added to our team and showed much promise in his first game. With the help to have more victories. Others deserving credit are Bob Gay, manager, and Bob Bales, timekeeper.
Page 49
Each year at the completion of the basketball season, three boys are presented with trophies for their performances in the games. The honor this year goes to Nick Summa, who, in the opinion of the coaches, is Goldey Beacom’s most valuable player and high scorer, and Al Hannum and Steve Engler, who are tied for the honor as the most improved player. The school faculty, and student boys are proud of these boys.
With an overall record of 14 wins and 4 losses, the Red and Whites garnered 1519 points to their opponents’ 1378; scored more than 100 points four times; had a ten game winning streak; and defeated our biggest rival, Trenton Junior College. Nick Summa annexed the team’s markers with 263 points to emerge as top scorer for the Goldey team.
Letters are awarded to squad members at the end of the season. Many of the varsity players look upon basketball as preparatory training for college competition. Some of them have already gone on to college via the basketball-scholarship route.
We all hope the Goldey team will continue to demonstrate team play and bring honor to Goldey Beacom. It is certain that they will be hustling all the way.

Life in the Dormitory
Franklin
Top Left Picture: At this time of the year, everyone gets spring fever.

Page 55
Typical dorm life is not typical at all. Instead it is atypical. There is no average day in our lives at the dorm because we never know what to expect; it hasn’t become stable yet. For instance, on returning from school, one might find that her roommate has made the mistake of mixing up her dates for that night, of that there is a sudden urgency to go somewhere maybe 50 or 100 miles away, or that she tried to “tip” her hair and it turned green. We don’t know why these things happen; all that is taken into consideration is the remedy or possible solutions.
We have a dining room which we enter for meals and for the unscrambling of the day’s events. This is the time we are all present and, therefore, conduct our dormitory meetings. The quiet-hour periods last for two hours each night. This time is devoted solely to study or relaxing or beauty treatments. This time is most essential in our day because we think out our problems, study our homework, cram for tests, or “goof off” as some of us do. It is the only time in our day that we have no outside communication.
We have the necessary features for a perfect dorm life: eating, studying, sleeping, playing—and each other.

The W.G. Ott Law Association
Motto: “Law and Morals”
Top Left Picture: Chancellor: Gregg Bernt. Corresponding Secretary: Caryll Holtzman. Recording Secretary: Wanda Matthews and Joseph DeLussa. Treasurer: Paul Phillips.
The members of the W.G. Ott Law Association are students who are interested in gaining a knowledge of law beyond that required in the two business law courses.
Meeting once a month, the group hears speakers whose topics include such areas as law, communism, and juvenile delinquency. In addition, the members of the club have field trips to points of interest such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation Headquarters in Washington, the Magistrate Court in New York, the Wilmington and Federal Courts, and nearby penal institutions.
The appropriate motto of the club is “Law and Morals.” The members of the Association feel that their affiliation with it has been enjoyable and rewarding and that the success of the club is largely the result of the efforts and guidance of Mr. Ott and the officers.

Alpha Iota Sorority
“Our Worldly Goods
Home. Sympathy, Affection…”
President: Sandra Fetsurka.
Vice President: Dorothy Dorofee.
Recording and Social Secretary: Patricia Hall.
Corresponding Secretary and Treasurer: Elizabeth Hoehnle.
Historian and Chaplain: Judy Schad.
Parliamentarian: Patricia Bryne.
The Alpha Lambda Chapter of the Alpha Iota Honorary Business Sorority of Goldey Beacom was formed in January, 1931. Since then, it has grown into a sorority that has brought the members within to become more closely associated with each other in regard to sharing and helping—as sisters should. All sisters of Alpha Iota are aware of the objectives of the sorority; namely, to create and to perpetuate a friendly spirit among students of our school; to extend friendly courtesies to new students; and, above all, to help each other when possible in the securing of positions or promotions.
Eligibility for membership in the sorority requires the following:
(1) Every girl must be doing superior work as a student.
(2) Every girl must be of good character and personality.
The attitude of Alpha Iota Sisters toward each other is “Those who have been initiated into the mysteries of our Sorority should meet as sisters of the blood—sharing home; sympathy; affection; and, if need be, worldly goods.”
