Success is
Our Style
Goldey-Beacom College today aspires to the same goals our founding fathers, H.S. Goldey and W.H. Beacom, set forth 102 years ago. They established a tradition of a teaching-oriented institution of higher learning whose mission was and still is to provide a caring and intellectually stimulating learning environment.
However, fun and friendships of the proverbial “college life” extend far beyond the classroom experience. Both yesterday and today Goldey-Beacom students strive to attain their own personal success.
SUCCESS (sĆŹk-ses’) n. 1. The achievement of something desired, planned, or attempted. 2. The gaining of wealth, fame, rank, or prosperity.
We are reaching for a new style. Two new majors found their way into our curriculum this year. Management Information Systems combines the computer technology with the management concepts necessary in today’s business world. International Business Management responds to the realization to our interdependent world.
This is why at Goldey-Beacom College…
SUCCESS IS OUR STYLE.

The Student Government Association underwent a change in administration this year. Elections for officers were held, and Ron Inglis became president, Brian Jay Tarr, vice president, and Chris Sobocinski, secretary. To commence this all-important organization on the right foot took much dedication on the right foot took much dedication to the project. Meetings were held every other Tuesday. The previous by-laws were amended and approved. S.G.A. requested that all organizations be chartered and be represented at each S.G.A. meeting. They began many projects which improved the campus. A fund raiser was sought to replace the entrance sign to Goldey Beacom. Members of S.G.A. observed local snack bars in order to improve our own. In addition, they shut down the operation of the used bookstore. S.G.A. has put a lot of time into these projects and have once again gained the respect off the students. The International Students Association was one of the fastest growing organizations on campus. Their president was Moagisi “Super” Koontse; vice president, Qadir “Q” Wahid; treasurer, Zepherin Francis; secretary Tshiamo “TK” Moswela; an dpublic secretary, Iqbal Hussain. Their total membership was over 50 students strong. I.S.A. met twice a month on Tuesdays at 2:00 p.m. Many of the international students attending Goldey Beacom College are in the United States for the first time and find the cultural adjustment overwhelming. The purpose of I.S.A. is to help their members adapt not only socially, but also academically. The organization took a bus trip around Delaware, visiting local points of interests. They also went to a pub in Pennsylvania for an outing of pizza and beer.

NAA
Alpha Chi is the national college-level honor society ay Goldey. Members are eligible for this club must have been in their junior or senior year and in the upper 10% of their classes. A members duties were to attend meetings, tutor in the Learning Resource Center three hours per semester, and join one committee.
The Marketing Association is an organization which helps its members become better aware of the business world. They bring in numerous speakers from small companies to large corporations. These speakers inform the club members about their positions and what their corporation has to offer.
The National Association of Accountants has a membership of over 30 members. This club is in its third year of existence. Its purpose is to help their members make a successful transition from academics to the business world. NAA took a trip to Washington, D.C. to tour an Accounting firm. Also, they sponsored one of the school’s dances held in the fall.
Alpha Chi celebrated its seventh annual induction ceremony on November 10, 1988. Twenty-five new members were inducted.

G-BC Singers
Pageant Club
The Goldey-Beacom College Singers is an eleven member singing ensemble which is in its first full year at Goldey-Beacom. The group made several important improvements over the year. The singers were the opening act of the Follies, and also gave a Christmas concert in Fulmer Lounge. Under the harmonious ears of Mr. J. Neal Isaac, the group will continue to grow in vocal strength and in number.
The Pageant Club is a group of interested students who participate in the production of the Miss Goldey-Beacom College Scholarship Pageant, a preliminary to the Miss America Pageant. The club does regular fund-raisers, help contestants prepare for the specific portions of the pageant, and is responsible for such details as pageant entertainment, attending the conducting pre-pageant rehearsals, and many other pageant-related-activities. The Pageant Club is also under the direction of Mr. Isaac. As many contestants realize, without the club the Miss Goldey-Beacom College Pageant would not be a success.

The Pillar
The Communicator
The Pillar is the first yearbook at Goldey-Beacom in five years. The massive undertaking of re-organizing this project fell upon the shoulders of Keith Facchiano and Carole Price.
The plans for the book were presented to President Baldt and were quickly approved. The next step was to find a publisher and a photographer. Once this was done, the editorial staff was selected. Finally, after seven months, the actual book could be planned. Due to the staff’s determination all deadlines were met.
As you read and enjoy this book, remember hard work and determination has turned into success.
The Communicator is the student-run newspaper at Goldey-Beacom College. The paper is published once a month, and gives an overview of who’s who and what’s what at the college. Even though many people contribute to the paper, it would not be what it is without Joann Ciuffetelli.
JoAnn has been editor of the newspaper for three years. She has brought the paper from what was once a grab-bag of stories about the college to a professional outlook of campus activities.
Even though The Communicator has a relatively small staff, it is a successfully styled piece of art.

Sigma Delta Rho
Alpha Lambda Iota
Sigma Delta Rho Fraternity is a society of college students committed to the bond of brotherhood. The fraternity was organized to build and develop young men of high standards and strong moral character, to promote f5riendhsip and congeniality within the community and Goldey-Beacom.
The fraternity was founded in 1966, and reorganized in the fall of 1977. Together with their sister sorority, Alpha Lambda Iota, they will continue to strive for excellence, and to give the business world their finest young leaders.
Alpha Lambda Iota Sorority is the oldest national Greek organization on campus. The sorority was founded in 1925 and incorporated in 1930.
Each of the thirty-four active members doctors a spirit of loyalty and promotes student welfare. Alpha Lambda Iota and Sigma Delta Rho lay the foundations for the future success of Goldey-Beacom College.

Kappa Omega Pi
Zeta Nu Upsilon
Zeta Nu Upsilon sorority was founded 1967 and their brother fraternity, Kappa Omega Pi was founded in 1968. More than twenty years later Zeta and Kappa had 51 active members and hundreds of brothers and sisters had passed through the organization and gained the many benefits which Zeta and Kappa had to offer.
Zeta and Kappa didn’t have the numbers that other organizations had, but they believed quality among its members was one trait their group always maintained and always will maintain. In addition to the parties and fun times which this organization enjoyed, Zeta and Kappa also were involved in improving the college community. Every year during the Christmas season Kappa sponsors a needy family by collecting cloths, food, and gifts. The goals of Zeta and Kappa were to create a strong sister/brotherhood and maintain their academic standing.
This was the first year which all members who lived on campus were able to live together under Jackson Hall. Their greek letters were quickly installed. Zeta and Kappa were proud of this addition to make their group “family.”

Beta Psi was reorganized during the fall semester. The purpose of the club was to encourage the development of Negros in the business profession and create fellowship among its members. In doing this its member’s intent was to improve the social and civic condition of the college community. They sponsored a Def jam dance.
Christian Fellowship is a non-denominational group. It met every Tuesday evening for one hour in the Leach Hall lounge. The group discussed social issues, Bible study, and provided a time for members to talk informally. Christian Fellowship also attended a weekend retreat and had pizza parties.
Circle K took over the leadership of Krista Humble. This organization is the social service club of Goldey-Beacom College. Their purpose was to enhance the college community by volunteering services. Circle K had fundraisers including a sundae bar and Christmas Bazaar.

RA’s
RSA
The Resident Assistants consisted of Faith Benjamin, Juanita Bowens, Brad Gross, Greg Knots, Pete Marcozzi, Patty Murray, Mark Receveur, Rupert Rojer, and Olga “Cissy” Sterling. These Resident Assistants lived in one of the four dorm buildings serving as mediator between sudents and administration. Whenever resident students had roommate problems, needed sound advice, or even a replacement light bulb they saw their RA. Resident Assistants also conducted the health and safety inspections of the apartments. An RA’s job can be very frustrating. Hats off to those people willing to help improve resident living.
RSA stands for Resident Student Association. R.J. Juliano, Coordinator of Housing and Residence Living, is the advisor to this organization. Its purpose was to motivate students to get involved in on-campus activities. RSA sponsored hall decorating contests, barbeques, end-of-the-semster study breaks, and community service projects. They also sponsored the Mock Cocktail Party during the Alcohol Awareness Week.

DAC
RCC
DAC stands for Dean’s Advisory Council. The members of this group include Juanita Bowens, Todd Burt, Michael Carr, Lynne DiOrio, Garett Dorman, and William Wolf White IV. The purpose of this council was to advise Gary Wirt, Dean of Students, on any decision he felt assistance was necessary. This group began meeting once a week during open hour during the end of the fall semester. This council truly demonstrates Dean Wirt’s interest in the student body’s opinion.
RCC stands for Resident Conduct Council. This group began operation in 1987-88 school year. Members of this organization live in one of the residence halls. Members were elected at the beginning of the fall semester during the first week residence hall meetings. The council met to discuss student discipline problems and determine courses of action. RCC’s purpose was to improve the living conditions in the residence halls by reducing disciplinary problems.

The Student Life Office is the backbone of GBC. Every day 10-15 students walk into the SLO for advice on every type of problem imaginable.
The people who make up the SLO are Gary Wirt, Dean of Students; J. Neal Isaac, Coordinator of Student Life; RJ Juliano, Coordinator of Resident Life; Paula Finnefrock, Secretary of Student Affairs; Albin Schindler, Coordinator of Residence Hall Maintenance and Nora Crossan, Residence Hall Maintenance.
Overall, the Student Life Office has a personal relationship with the students. From the campus-wide picnic to Spirit Day, the SLO keeps business and pleasure together.

Move-In Day
Campus-Wide Picnic
One of the saddest, or happiest, days in students’ college career is the day they move on campus. On Sept. 4, over 300 students converged on Goldey-Beacom to begin another semester of cooking, cleaning, shopping, studying, and partying. Even though it was a day of rain, most students were looking forward to starting life away from home.
To celebrate the beginning of a successful school year there was a campus-wide picnic on Sept. 12. The well attended picnic was to celebrate the 102nd birthday of the college. Overall, everyone left with a full stomach and a fresh outlook on the school.

From Pledging…
Why would anyone want to put themselves through 2 or 3 weeks of torture to be in a Greek organization? Why should you risk your reputation by spending 2 hours a night doing aid raids? Being little red wagons? Being a cross-dresser? Or being a salamander?
A lifetime of brotherhood and sisterhood is the answer for some, yet for others it is just to fit in. Being in a Greek organization enables you to ask advice from your peers, gain friends, become popular and to go to parties, if you desire.
At the beginning of the semester each Greek “family” has a rush to help prospective pledges learn more about “Greek life.” Pledges then sing, dance, run, and do other things in all types of weather. By the time pledging is over, the pledges are physically and mentally worn out.

… To The Acceptance Dances
We Are Now Family!
On October 15, 1988, Kappa Omega Pi and Zeta Nu Upilson held their fall acceptance dance. The dance was to honor and accept all of the new beothers and sisters who survived pledging. The new members are: Bill Andrews, Mike Cleary, Pete Darrigo, Bill Lardi, Jeff Lighthall, Greg Massey, Kevin Posivak, Charlie Puit, Sanjay Savla, Todd Simpson, Bill White, Kelly Boyce, Samantha Ericson, Suzanne Henning, Susan Kauffman, Andrea Loveland, Wanda Shreck, and Jessica Webb. Best Pledge went to Greg Massey and Wanda Shreck.
On October 21, 1988, Sigma Delta Rho and Alpha Lambda Iota held their fall acceptance dance. The dance was a welcome relief to the previous three weeks of pledging. The pledges who were welcomed to Sigma and Alpha are: Rich Capalelli, Garret Dorman, Jack Dorris, Jeff Good, Frank Guns, Harry Hanna, Brad Herbner, Charlie Kim, Jason Morgan, Mark Receiver, Blythe Barnes, Angie Chipman, Sandra Duncan, Allison Farmer, Beth Olds, Susan Thompson, Jodi White, Kim White, and Gwen Venuto. Best Pledge went to Jeff Good and Blythe Barnes.

Alcohol Awareness
Alcohol Awareness Week occurred Oct. 3-7. Many of the GBC student organizations came together to assist in this event. The purpose of this occasion was to generate concern for excessive alcohol intake. The week was full of activities and was sponsored by the Student Life Office, with several student organizations sponsoring separate events.
On Monday, students were greeted by inflated beer and wine cooler bottles and a sign declaring “ KNOW WHEN TO SAY WHEN.” A car involved in an alcohol-related accident was in the parking lot. Alpha sorority provided the “COVINCER” which re-enacted a car accident at approx. 15 mph. On Wednesday, Zeta sorority sponsored Ribbon Day, students wore ribbons to show they were alcohol-free. Also, RSA made non-alcoholic drinks and brought in Sara Taylor from Alls House to speak about the signs of a person who has had too much. Sigma fraternity tried a day without alcohol and Kappa fraternity distributed literature.

Follies
On Nov. 5, Goldey-Beacom College held its first GBC Follies at Alexis I. du Pont Middle School. Follies ’88, directed jointly by Gary Wirt and Neal Isaac, featured much of GBCs hidden talent. Highlighted on the night of nostalgia were the comedic talents of Dean Wirt, who along with Dean Humphrey and V.P. Jones high stepped to the Andrews Sisters’ “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy.” The marvelous talents of our students, faculty, and staff made the entire evening a success.

On one of first cold, dreary days of the fall. Goldey-Beacom had a first. A deer ran head-first into the building. Pat Moore was the person who suddenly found his office to have a new entrance. The crazed deer left Pat a calling card – both of his antlers.
Over Winterim we had our first major snowfall. As a typical Delaware snowstorm, it was followed by high winds. The victim of the storm was the Goldey-Beacom college sign next to Abel Hall.
Page 62
Speakers
Many speakers came to Goldey-Beacom College during the 1988-89 school year. These speakers were sponsored by the Student Life Office, Academic Speaker Series, Resident Student Association, Marketing Association, and National Association of Accountants.
The Student Life Office sponsored all of the governmental officials who spoke. SLO felt students should be kept informed because of the 1988 elections. Lt. Governor Woo, Senator Bill Roth, Governor Castle, and Dale Wolf were among the political candidates who visited the college. They expressed where they stood on the issues and addressed financial aid and how students could get involved with the local government. Each conference was followed by a question and answer session.
The Academic Speaker Series sponsored various speakers who spoke on diversified issues. Richie Asburn, a Philadelphia Phillies baseball player, spoke on his baseball career and his current career as Philadelphia Phillies announcer. Also, the Speaker Series sponsored a speaker who informed the student body on environmental pollution. The other speakers involved in this series are covered in the supplement.
Organizations such as Resident Student Association, Marketing Association, and the National Association of Accountants sponsored various speakers for the benefit of their members in respect to each organization’s purpose.

On December 9, 1989 Samantha Ericson was crowned Miss Noel and Michael Cleary was crowned Mr. Noel. Each year organizations sponsor freshman and the student body votes for their choice of Miss Noel and Mr. Noel. Both Samantha and Michael were sponsored by Zeta Nu Upsilon and Kappa Omega Pi.
Samantha Ericson was a B.S. Accounting major who pledged Zeta during the fall semester. She graduated from Pennsville Memorial High School in Pennsville, New Jersey. While attending Goldey-Beacom College she was employed by Haircut Company as a receptionist. Samantha’s hobbies included snow skiing, dancing, and going to the beach. She played the flute for seven years. In addition, she received a scholarship from the Soccer Association.
Michael Cleary was a B.S. Marketing Management major who pledged Kappa during the Fall semester. He also was a member of Student Host committee. Mike graduated from St. Mark’s high School in New Castle, Delaware. He came to Goldey-Beacom with a Merit Scholarship and works with Sam Dali in the Evening Division Office. In addition, he was a unit clerk at Christiana Medical Center. Mike’s hobbies include snow skiing and he plans skiing trips through a club which he belongs.

Mr. GBC
Tim Price was elected r. GBC on March 17, 1988 during Spirit Day. The responsibilities of Mr. GBC are not demanding, however; the spirit Tim has generated has ignited many female hearts.
Mr. GBC is a annual fundraiser, held on Spirit Day, sponsored by the pageant committee. Each contestant has a jar with his name on it and whoever has the most money at the end of the day is the new Mr. GBC.
It is general consensus that whoever follows Tim Price will have a great legacy to fill.

Miss GBC
Kristen Hawk was crowned Miss GBC on April 17, 1988 at H.B. duPont Middle School. Her reign lasted one full year, at which time she turned over this honor to the next Miss GBC. The responsibilities of Miss Hawk included participating in the Miss Delaware pageant where she received a first place non-finalist talent award. Kristen was a member of the Student Host Committee, and she welcomed all parents and prospective students at the Open Houses. She represented Goldey-Beacom College – Milford campus in the Milford Halloween Parade. Miss Hawk also performed at special affairs requested pf her by President Baldt. She co-hosted Honors Day and helped out on Spirit Day. Kristen’s position is one of great honor and esteem. She gained many friends and greeted strangers with a smile.

Braves
Surprise…Goldey-Beacom actually has a mascot. The GBC Brave traces back before the college make the move to Pike Creek Valley. The GBC Brave mascot used to take center stage on the wall of the Fulmer Lounge. He has since been painted over. We were able to find a copy of the Brave, thanks to the 1977 edition of the Key Yearbook. Goldey-Beacom – the few, the proud, the BRAVES.

1989 Pillar Yearbook
“I wish they had combative sports at
Goldey-Beacom. Well, you could always join
the yearbook.” These words rang out loud
and clear at Follies ’88. The trials and
tribulations of the first year were all part of
“giving birth” to the new yearbook.
It is true that the first Pillar staff had its
share of turmoil, but we have turned that
combative nature into the style of success.
fighting is something that most people do not
like, but there is a time and a place for
everything. This time the battles that arose
among each and every member of the
editorial staff helped to produce a high quality
publication for which we are proud.
Through it all, this has been an extremely
successful year for the yearbook, and even
though some of the original editors are not
with us at the end, I would like to personally
thank them for all they did and for all they
taught me. Again, thank you Amy Stauffer,
Bill Wohner, G. Bernarde Acree, and Leonard
Collins for everything. The endurance of the
remaining members of the staff is a great
asset to the Pillar. Without their loyalty and
hard work the Pillar would have never been a
reality.
The entire yearbook team, the advisors,
editors, staff, publisher, and photographers
have done what no one else has been able to
do at GBC in years, publish a yearbook. It is
in years to come.
