To the class of 1980
Academically you are all well prepared to meet the demands of the “business world.” Your skills have been sharpened by diligence to study and the guidance of a professional faculty and staff dedicated to the finest collegiate experience. Hopefully, you will be able to maintain those skills and keep pace with new demands through continued study in the college’s day and/or evening division.
Obviously, your experiences here have gone beyond the classroom. Those experiences – social, political, and athletic – have been helpful in the “process of education.”
You have played very significant part in the dynamics of a special kind of education – independent collegiate education. Predictions are that the new decade will experience a severe decline in the number of colleges like your alma mater. However, goldey-beacom college will continue to draw considerable strength from a number of sources – students, faculty, staff, trustees, advisory boards, and community friends.
Alumni must be counted on as a reservoir of support. The college needs your advice and counsel, and your financial support as well, if we are to maintain the high level of service to our students and the community. On considering your responsibilities for the public good as education men and women, please remember goldey-beacom college.
Our best wishes for health and happiness.
William R. Baldt
President

In memoriam
James h. sears, assistant to the president and a trustee of goldey-beacom college, will be greatly missed by all who knew him and were associated with him. He died on January 30, 1980, after a long illness. Despite this illness, he had been a familiar presence to the faculty, staff and students of the college as he worked on alumni affairs and development. A staunch supporter of goldey-beacom who constantly promoted its program to the public, his contributions to the college were outstanding.
Mr. Sears retired from the personnel department of the duPont company in 1976. Throughout his 42 years with dupont, he held a series of personnel posts, retiring as coordinator of industrial educational activity. He has been named to the presidents and governors committees on employment of the handicapped and also had been named director for the national alliance of business, a committee set up to find jobs for the hard-core unemployed. In 1960 he was awarded a governor’s citation.
Other community activities included the advisory board of upward bound and college try; the rehabilitation committee of the mental health association; board president of the opportunity center, inc., of Wilmington; the chairmanship of the industrial services committee of the y.m.c.a.; and the employee relations group of the Delaware state chamber of commerce.

Bottom Right Picture: Mr. & Mrs. J. Wilbur Hirons.
J. Wilburn Hirons, former chairman of the board of the college, announced at graduation that he has created a scholarship that will be named for his wife, Anne Wright Hirons. The first grant will be made in 1981.

Spirit Day 1980
March 5, 1980. Lots of spirit was apparent on this day—first year students showed surprise; returning students were eagerly looking forward to another spirit day. Regularly scheduled classes were held but there were lots of activities in between. Gbc students showed lots of “spirit” in all their hard work beforehand in decorating the halls and the lounge; they also showed lots of “spirit” in taking part in all the festivities. Everyone looks forward to another even better year.

Student Government
This year the student government at goldey beacom college has been very active. We have raised approximately $400 from fund raising activities; have operated the used book store; and sponsored a very successful fund raiser for harry evans after his apartment home was gutted by a fire. We have also assisted in open houses at goldey, acting as your guides, along with welcoming new students at the fall and spring semester orientations. We are presently planning possible contribution of a pavilion or benches which would be strategically placed around the school. Student Government looks forward to another productive year 1981.
Activities Council
The vice president of the student government presides over the meetings of the activities council. This council consists of appointed representatives from each of the campus organizations. Its purpose is to plan interesting and exciting activities for all the students.

Kappa Omega Pi fraternity is open to all male students who attend goldey beacom college. Numerically, we are a small group, but we are by far the closet knit group at gbc. Our fraternity is well known for its various activities not only within the college but also in the surrounding area. We also dominate the college intramural sports and activities, not to mention the fact our dominance continues in all group competition. Our fraternity is greatly supported by our little sisters, zetanu upsilon sorority, which by far is the best sorority at gbc. Perhaps our strongest point is the brotherhood within the fraternity, not only during school but throughout the year and for each member’s lifetime. We are in constant contact with inactive brothers (those not now attending gbc) when we need advice or when we have an event, activity, or one of our famous kappa parties.
Page 67
Zeta
Zeta Nu Upsilon is a young women’s organization that not only brings girls closer together but helps build strength and character. During the school year, we participate in many activities, fund raisers, and community projects.
Throughout our adventures, we are supported by our brothers, kappa omega pi. This unique group of brothers is thought of in a special way.
Highlights of the year include successful pledge classes, selling roses, bake sales, car wash, walk-a-thon for cancer, visiting leach school, cheering kappa onto outstanding victories in football and basketball, the “unique clothing party”, zeta picnic, and the kappa/zeta picnic at Mr. Katz’s.

Women's Volleyball
The 1979-1980 volleyball team had a very good record of wins and losses – 9 to 5. We had a good starting team, as well as good alternative players. The team liked to make some games more interesting than others – instead of winning the first three games of the match, we lost the first and won the next three. Cheryl Cescon, the best server, had one match in which she served 43 points consecutively. Spikers were Pat Thompson, Rhoda Lively, Andrea Stapel, Sandy Jones, Cynthia Thompson, Kathy Moyer, Cheryl Cescon, and Malinda Madison. Setters were Lisa Mirabella, Michele Lloyd, and the captain – Angie Pratt. Next yeaar’s team should have a good season.
