Jane E. DeGrange
No one is not replaceable, but some people are much more difficult to replace than others. We count Jane DeGrange, Vice President and Dean of Student Services, among those who are extremely difficult to replace. Jane has given almost ten years of service to GBC, with many unique contributions. Although she is leaving the Wilmington area to live in Sussex County, we are sure that she will continue to be a very active contributor to any organization to which she offers her services.
Mrs. DeGrange was the first full-time counselor hired by Goldey Beacom College. Over the years she developed a n extensive student services program, including responsibility for the residence halls, security, financial aid, activities, and athletics. During that time, she was always available to help the students whether they needed advice or just a friend to listen to their problems...
Jane was honored on "Dean DeGrange Day" by the Student Government of GBC. At that tine it was announced that an annual cash award and plaque will be given at graduation in her honor. Recipients of that award will best exemplify such things as College spirit, dedication, and involvement in school activities. This is a very fitting way to honor Jane DeGrange. A more formal reception was also given in January at the University and Whist Club. This was attended by husband Jack and son David.
We wish the DeGranges many happy years of retirement.

Gertrude Weaver
After 26 years of service to Goldey Beacom, we also say good luck and many happy years of retirement to Gertrude Weaver, Professor, who has spent those years teaching students how to write letters, transcribe, and how to perform those myriad functions required in a secretarial position. Mrs. Weaver has always been proud of her knowledge of words and, for that reason, her favorite subject was written communications.
Gertrude Weaver's service to the school has gone beyond the classroom. She was co-chairman of GBC's first major self study in 1976, a project to which she devoted many hours outside of the classroom. She has also served on many committees and willingly gave her time to help College functions and students.
Mrs. Weaver was honored at a luncheon in May. This was attended by members and retirees of the Goldey Beacom College community. In addition to the traditional gifts, she was given some interesting items by the "MC" for the program, Bob Pearl's. One of these items was a hat on the order of Minnie Pearl's. Her students also let her know she would be missed with their own remembrances.
In 1978 Gertrude Weaver was chosen by President Baldt to be the first recipient of the Distinguished Teacher Aware, an honor well deserved.

While our role has been that of teacher, you must realize that the process is indeed reciprocal. considering that our students have an unparalleled seriousness of purpose, you have helped us to fulfill our professional ambitions -- for that and for the many other experiences, we are truly grateful.
You have achieved in a very demanding curriculum -- we know! While we suppose things could have been easier, your preparation for and advancement in your career took priority. Obviously your learning did not begin at Goldey Beacom College nor should it end now. ADMINISTRATION
Mohammad Ilyas
Dr. Mohammad Ilyas, Vice President of Academic Affairs at Goldey Beacom College, has come a long way from Lahore, Pakistan, where he was born, in order to serve in the administration of the College. His career has been varied; his education extensive; but his interest has long been in business education. Dr. Ilyas' bachelor's degree was in liberal arts from the University of the Panjab in Pakistan and from there he began specializing in business education. He has acquired a master's degree from the same University in Pakistan; a 6th Year Diploma from the University of Connecticut, and in Pakistan.
Dy. Ilyas has many distinctions -- he was a Fulbright Scholar; earned his doctoral degree with honors; won an award from American Friends of the Middle East, Inc., for being an outstanding student in the U.S.; and has won many distinctions in college sports. He holds memberships in professional organizations, and he co-authored books on typewriting. Since he has taught such subjects as typewriting and shorthand, Dr. Ilyas brings special knowledge and expertise to his position.

Stewart Jackson
Stewart Jackson, Director of Alumni Affairs, has had close ties to Goldey and Beacom Colleges since he was born. His father, A. Raymond Jackson, is the retired Executive Vice President of Goldey Beacom College. A. Raymond Jackson served the College for 50 years (from 1922-1972) and Stewart is trying to match that record. Since Stewart started working for Beacom College the day after his graduation from the University of Delaware in 1950, he still has a few years to go.
Stewart was brought up in the City of Wilmington where his parents still live. He attended Harlan Elementary School, Warner Junior High School, and graduated from P.S. duPont High School. He completed one year of college at Beacom and then went into the U.S. Army, serving as a military policemen at Camp Stoneman, California. When he got out of service, he resumed his education at the University of Delaware, graduating with a bachelor's degree in business administration. he worked for many years in the Admissions Department of Goldey Beacom and was just the right person to head up the new Division of Alumni Affairs. In the last two years Stewart has spent many hours bringing the alumni records up to date and working on new projects to make the alumni an active part of Goldey Beacom College.
Stewart Jackson belongs to many organization. Among these are the Red Clay Kiwanis, Optimist, and the Jaycees. He is also a 32nd Degree Mason. His only son -- Stewart Bruce -- is a 1982 graduate of Philadelphia College of Art. Stewart and wife Emily (Seward) live nearby in Mermaid Run. If he has spare time, he likes to spend it near the water. Fishing is a favorite sport.

Business Office
Perhaps not as well known to outsiders as another "coal miner's daughter," but certainly very well know to Goldey Beacom students, is our Bookstore Manager, Julia Ostafy. Julie comes to us from Minersville, Pennsylvania, and was a business graduate of the Ford Business School in Pottsville before starting a career as a stenographer.
Besides enjoying her job, Julie enjoys being a housewife. In addition to keeping her house in a good order, she does some sewing. Four children -- Michelle, Wayne, Gloria, and Tanya -- a husband, and a dog, make up the Ostafy household. When her son's dog had 11 puppies, he informed her that she was now a grandmother.
Julie came to work fir Goldey Beacom for "six weeks" when the new campus was opened in Pike Creek Valley. It has been a long six weeks since she has now been here since 1974. By the way, her father really was a coal miner from the Ukraine. Proud of her Ukrainian heritage, Julie takes an active part in the Ukrainian community. She appreciates the opportunity for fellowship with people of common ancestry.

ADMISSIONS
ALICE CARSON
Administrative Assistant to the Vice President and Dean of Admissions, Alice Carson has been working for the Goldey Beacom full time since she graduated from the College in 1975 with an Associate Degree a an executive secretary. With a Chichester, Pennsylvania, high school background that was totally academic, Alice cautiously ventured into the business world with a part-time job at W.T Grant and then work study in Goldey's Admission Department. She is presently pursuing a bachelors in Office Administration.
While attending college, Alice was a Zeta sister. After graduation she became the advisor, a voluntary job she has thoroughly enjoyed. She is also a member of Professional Secretaries International and has served on education, CPS, and program committees. If she has any spare time, she likes to sit in the sun and read -- or play miniature golf.
Alice reluctantly plans to leave GBC and find a job in the Salisbury, Maryland, area. Marriage to her long-time sweetheart Don Bailey means moving too far too commute. it will be a new and interesting world for Alice. We wish her lots of luck.

ADVISEMENT
GEORGE LEE
George Lee, Associate Professor and Academic Dean in charge of the Advisement Center, has been with GBC for nine years. Before coming to Goldey to teach the students in the DuPont program, he taught in Salisbury, Maryland. When he came to GBC, George immediately became involved fully in college activities. Along with his teaching duties, George has been an active promoter and worker in the Miss GBC pageant; he has served on many college committees; and served as president of the old Faculty Senate. He was a teacher of typing, shorthand, and English, including oral communications, and he was also department chairman for secretarial science. When the Academic Advisement Center was going to be established, George's background and experience proved to be just what was needed to make this a viable part of the College.
A native of Florence, New Jersey, George attended Atlantic Christian College in North Carolina, earning his bachelor's degree there. Later on he earned his master's at West Chester State. He has also taken other classes which he felt would be useful. George is an active member of organizations, among these is Phi Beta Kappa. He is also 1982-83 President of the Delaware Business Teacher's Association.

STUDENT SERVICES
Harry “Boots” Reed
Affable, easy-going, and always ready to help when needed or asked, might best describe Goldey’s athletic coach---a man who has been with GBC for more than twenty-five years. Boots started with the College at Ninth & Madison in Wilmington working as a part-time, assistant basketball coach under the auspices of Earl Burns. When Coach Burns left in 1960, Boots took over the coaching job. Since then he has added directing of other athletic activities.
Originally from Denton, Maryland, Boots spent most of his life in Claymont. When he graduated from Brown Vocational, he started working as a machinist, but athletic coaching was his first love. He would like very much to see Goldey go back into semi-professional sports---in past years he has coached some outstandingly successful basketball teams.
Outside of school Boots has many interests. These include golf and community activities---he spent several years on the Board of New Castle County Technical-Vocational School. Before he gets around to retiring, though, Boots hopes to see GBC with a nice, big multi-purpose building---a building with a gym big enough and complete enough to encourage the students to take a much more active part in sports.

Gloria Coe
Goldey was fortunate in 1975 when Gloria Coe was hired to be a part-time reference librarian. Her expertise was immediately put to good use. Before coming to GBC, Gloria has worked as a children’s librarian, a school librarian, and even as an Army librarian at Fort Jackson in South Carolina. Born and educated in South Carolina, Gloria is very fond of her home state, but if the opportunity ever arose her choice of a home would be Northern California, a state she loves. She earned her bachelor’s degree at Winthrop College in South Carolina, and a master’s in library science at Villanova University.
One thing Gloria likes to do is travel. The Coes—Gloria and Frank—have traveled quite a bit, but there are still many places they would like to go.
Among her other interests are reading (of course) and cooking. The Coes belong to a gourmet cooking club and enjoy experimenting with new and different dishes. Since her three children are grown, there is a little more time for some of the other interests.
Gloria doesn’t fit the stereotype of a librarian; she was a beauty contest winner, although she tries to play that down. Her helpfulness is appreciated by all those she comes into contact with. Gloria has served on many committees at GBC, and is always available when needed. She has been an invaluable help with the yearbook---a service which we appreciate very much.

BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION
A native of Brooklyn, New York, the metropolitan New York accent sometimes comes through when Mike Katz is discussing law with his students. He is a graduate of the State University of New York with a bachelor’s degree in political science; then he went on to acquire his Juris Doctorate from the Delaware Law School. Mike was one of the early graduates of that law school, something of which he is licensed to practice in both states. He has been teaching at Goldey since 1975, when he started on a part-time basis. He also has a private practice, but he enjoys teaching most of all. Mike teaches both law and political science.
Even though he has limited time for outside interest, Mike likes to read and is an avid collector of beer cans. He enjoys music of any type---from classical to jazz. He has also been advisor to Kappa almost since the time he started at Goldey. He is a member of the Newark JC’s and is active in committee work for the Delaware Bar Association. Mike is married and has one son---the second child will be here soon after this book comes out.

Joanne Wolfe, Associate Professor.
Very different from a Brooklyn accent, we hear a softer Southern accent in the voice of JoAnne Wolfe. Mrs. Wolfe was born in Tennessee, but she received her education in Kentucky and Indiana as well as her home state. She has business education and business administration degrees, receiving her master’s from Murray State University. Before coming to Goldey Beacom College, JoAnne taught at junior high, high school, junior college, and the university teaching levels. She taught for eight years at the University of Delaware. She is also the author of a textbook entitled Delaware Real Estate Mathematics.
JoAnne Wolfe and husband Ben live in Newark, Delaware, with their miniature schnauzer “Muffin Dog.” She enjoys spending time with her husband at their Newark home or their beach home; or traveling around the United States. Their most enjoyable time is spent worshipping and fellowshipping at their church.

ENGLISH LIBERAL ARTS
Allen Alexander has taught at Goldey Beacom for several years in both management and the social studies areas, although his background is mainly in research methods, statistics, and urban sociology. He is a graduate of Temple University, with both bachelor’s and master’s degrees from that school.
As a native Delawarean---brought up in both Wilmington and Dover---Allen has a special interest in urban renewal in the City of Wilmington. He lives in the center City area with his wife and two children, and is an active member of Cityside. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the Elementary Workshop. If he has any spare time, the time is spent remodeling the Victorin-era house he lives in. This gives him a chance to use his carpentry skills. Time left over might be spent in camping and canoeing.
With his other major interest in electronic equipment Allen has just started his own business. He plans to work with small businesses in computer-based areas; he also plans to work on grants and fund-raising ventures for non-profit agencies. We wish him luck.

Phyllis Turpin
Phyllis Turpin was an excellent choice for the second Distinguished Faculty award given at graduation ceremonies in 1979. Over the years she has served Goldey Beacom College, she has acquired a reputation for fairness and excellence in teaching with both students and other faculty members. Phyllis originally came from near Scranton, Pennsylvania, and started teaching at GBC in 1950 after graduating from Temple University. She has had short breaks for three children, but has spent most of the last thirty years at Goldey.
A long-standing interest on the Professional Secretaries International gives Phyllis a chance to see some Goldey alumni when she attends their annual workshop. Her other interests include spending summer weekends at their beach home on the Jersey shore and traveling extensively. When Harvey can also find time, they try to see as much of the world as possible. Because of their interest in their Welsh heritage, the Turpins began their travels to the Continent by visiting Wales. Since then they have visited many other European countries, including Russia. Someday she plans to visit other parts of the U.S. besides the Eastern states.
Phyllis also enjoys baby-sitting with her two grandchildren. Daughter Janet is a graduate of Goldey and son Jim is presently attending.

Elma Doberstein
Elma Doberstein is a long-time employee of Goldey Beacom College. She started working for Goldey College secretary to Jay Miller, Vice President of Goldey, before the two schools were combined. Elma spent many years working in the Business Office as a secretary, but recently became Administrative Assistant to the Evening School Director. The hours are a little more irregular, but Elma enjoys working with the Evening Division.
When she attended Goldey, Elma was an Alpha sister and became the advisor for many years. She started an alumni chapter in Wilmington.
Elma is a native of the Wilmington area. She graduated from Ursuline Academy before attending College. Two sisters and nieces and nephews are still living nearby. She would like to do more traveling but also enjoys the passive hobby of reading.
Outside of working hours, Elma is a charter member and still very active in the Delaware Chapter of Professional Secretaries International (formerly the National Secretaries Association). She is in her second year as treasurer, and has served on many committees. She is also a very devout church goer, who attends Mass every morning. Her years of experience and willingness to work are invaluable to GBC.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS
Jan Robinson
Jan Robinson, Director of Special Academic Programs, has a special interest in the students who are served by these programs at GBC. She started teaching in the Veteran’s program and then went directly into teaching in the special programs. When a director was needed, Jan seemed like an obvious choice. Jan thoroughly enjoys working with students whom she feels are highly motivated and industrious. She believes that the mutual respect engendered by students and faculty is inspiring to all who come in contact with the personnel in these programs.
As an Army “brat,” no place is really home to Jan as she has lived in many parts of the world. Although she was born in Virginia, she has attended schools in many parts of the world including Italy and Germany. She finished college at the University of Pennsylvania and then earned her master’s degree at the University of Delaware. She has taught in high schools and other Delaware colleges, but she has also had an interesting career as a travel agent. Jan feels that travel isn’t an important part of her life. Life as a travel agent was full and exciting, but being gone for weeks at a time was not ideal for family life. Through family travels, though, Jan believes that her 11-year-old son had acquired an excellent and broad education.

The Music Makers have been a very active organization this year. Their first performance was at the new student orientation in September. Keeping busy with practice twice a week, the Music Makers performed at the historic groundbreaking ceremony in November and entertained the patients at Emily Bissell Hospital on December 8. They also brought Christmas cheer to the residents at their annual Christmas party. Under the direction of Chris Maccarone and Presidents Barb Buckwalter and Cathy McMahon, the Music Makers are a dynamic organization on campus, providing musical entertainment whenever needed.

The 24-Hour Office Education Association “Dance Marathon” to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA), was held on Saturday and Sunday, February 28 and March 1, from noon to noon. Community and College support was plentiful, and $900 was contributed to MDA. Twenty dancers started and 15 held up until the end. Congratulations are in order to all who helped in such a worthwhile project!

CHARLES (CHUCK) MAYER, Selected by the COMMUNICATOR staff as the most outstanding member, Chuck is credited with being dependable, hardworking, and original. He created the “entertainment” section of this year’s COMMUNICATOR; arranged all interviews with club owners; kept all band features up to date; and saw to it that GBC knew all the latest gossip about the entertainment industry. As a super salesman, Chuck was responsible for getting 95 percent of the advertisements featured in the COMMUNICATOR. In addition, Chuck was the photographer for the newspaper. The staff appreciated all of Chuck’s efforts.

From September to January, the COMMUNICATOR was under the guidance of Carol Niemi. The student newspaper is published on a regular basis by a student staff, with the help of the faculty advisor. Mrs. Linda Dykes became the advisor when Mrs. Niemi left to complete work on her doctorate.

PAGEANT COMMITTEE
The Pageant Committee is a group of volunteers—students, faculty, and administration—who are responsible for planning the more “festive” events of the school calendar. The Miss Noel Dance in December; the Miss Goldey Beacom Pageant; and the Miss GBC Dinner Dance in May comprise the bulk of the activities.
This year we sponsored the first “Mr. Goldey Beacom Pageant” on Spirit Day. Setting a precedent is not always easy; but in this case it was a welcome change. The guys got to show-off while the girls watched, and everyone agreed that it was a good time.
The motto of the Pageant Committee this year was “to make the good times even better.” Accomplishing this goal took a lot of effort but gave much satisfaction. After all, giving people the opportunity to share smiles and laughter is the best reward anyone could ask for.

The 1981 Miss Noel Dinner Dance was held at the Greek Orthodox Community Center on December 12. Music was provided by “Onyx.” The winner of the Miss Noel crown for the 1982 year was Michelle Thomure. Michelle was awarded her trophy and flowers by Sharon Fulmer, Miss Noel of 1980.

Ten contestants competed for the title in the 1982 Miss Goldey Beacom Pageant held on April 25. The winner was Stacia Cropper of Ocean City, Maryland, representing Kappa. Stacia was an excellent choice. M.C.’s for the Pageant were Mary Jasinski Miss GBC of 1981, and Jodi Graham, the 1981 Miss Delaware.
In the talent competition, songs were presented by Staci, Nicole Tambourelli, Kathleen Kennedy, Carol Wakefield, Donna Miller, and Jamie DeLong. Stacy Allen played the guitar; Elena Scoot and Debbie Brown danced; and Shirley Martin performed mannequin modeling.
Stacia and Carol performed again very well in the June Miss Delaware Pageant. Stacia placed as 1st runnerup and won the talent contest. GBC was very well represented.

KAPPA OMEGA PI FRATERNITY was founded in 1968 when Goldey Beacom College was located in Wilmington. The fraternity is open to all male students who are attending GBC. Kappa believes they have a very strong brotherhood within the Fraternity; they keep in constant contact with their “brothers.”

Zeta Nu Upsilon was established to help young women to pursue opportunities to learn to expand their horizons in the business world and to lend support to the work of the national organization. This organization tries to bring the young women closer together and to help build strength and character; they feel that they share a lasting bond of friendship. This is an active organization which involves itself in many school and community activities.

Candy Lemon, 1981-82 President
Candy was selected by Zeta as their outstanding member of the year. She is a native of Pennsylvania. Candy enjoys reading, bike riding, camping, and the beach. Candy plans to work as a legal secretary. Future plans also include marriage to a former Kappa brother, Roger Palmer. Candy was voted as Zeta’s sister of the year because of the outstanding effort she gave to the sorority.

Sigma Delta Ro Fraternity has had a very good year. The members feel that in the past year they have developed more brotherhood and friendship within their fraternity and the community. They have an excellent pledge class. Some of the new pledges are Bob Millay; Paul Scharr; Richard Diaddario; and Brian Maloney. During the year they sponsored two semi-formal dances; played basketball, football, and softball against Kappa; and held fund raisers such as car washes and a pool party. Fred Escheu was president at the beginning of the year; Keith Ernest is the current president. One long-term goal of Sigma is to look into the possibility of a fraternity house.

An outstanding member, Cathy is considered to be a friend and supporter of all the sisters.
Alpha Iota Sorority, Alpha Lambda Chapter, is an international honor society with chapters in many leading business schools and colleges. The purpose of the sorority is to foster a spirit off loyalty and cooperation and to promote student welfare. The members of Alpha are active in student and community activities.

BLACK STUDENT UNION
Black Student Union was an active organization this year. They started off by decoration Leach Hall lounge for the annual Halloween party for the foster children. BSU also supported black history month by setting up a display in the Library – this display showed important black Americans and black literature which can be found in the Library. They hold fund-raiasers: the First Fashion Show was held on November 17, 1981, sponsored by Tops to Bottoms (BSU hopes to make this an annual event.) Models were Mary Jasinski, Anna Johnson, Inger Maull, Samme Rosenzweig, and Yvette Tillman. The male escorts were Henry Pacana, Kirk Slaughter, and Rodney Milstead. Special thanks to Henry, who sold 50 tickets to help out the organization! In the spring, BSU sponsored a disco; music was by Metal Mike from Lincoln University. Last – but not least – the organization thanks its president, Venita Clay, who put so much of her time and energy into the group.

MEDICAL ADVISORY
The Student Medical Advisory Committee is composed of five students who aid in college functions and help with administrative decisions within the Student Health Service. All members are expected to be certified in CPR and help with equipment detail set-ups for other CPR training sessions for students, faculty, and staff. All members also participate in the Great American Cancer Society.
The Advisory Committee has twice sponsored the “Bloodmobile” from the Blood Bank of Delaware. In 1981 they received a plaque that is now in the foyer of the Clarence E. Fulmer Center.

COUNCIL OF ORGANIZATIONS
The Council of Organizations was formed as a support group for all school activities under the direction of its first chairman, Norman Marlin. They meet once a month. Representatives from all school organizations are encouraged to attend. PHASE II
Phase II was started in the spring of 1980 as a support group for nontraditional students. Since that time, it has grown and become one of the leading campus organizations. Sponsoring such activities as the Oldies Dance and a spaghetti supper, Phase II is a name recognized by every student. Most important, though, the main goal of the member is to reach out to every non-traditional student and help them in their academic and social adjustment to Goldey Beacom College. To qualify as a member, a student must have been away from formal education got at least seven years. Plans are in the works to establish a group to serve the Evening Division. All members are looking forward to the coming year – to share their life’s expertise and hope; in turn, to learn a lot from everyone at GBC.
BIBLE STUDY
This is a non-sectarian group devoted to study of the Bible. Members come from all areas of the College – student body, faculty, and staff. The emphasis is on developing individual spiritual values and improving the quality of life.

She has attended conventions both at the State and National levels – an ideal way to learn more about our political system.

The philosophy of the International Student Association is to provide a place for international students to meet. All students (whether foreign or native-born) are encouraged to join this organization; it offers the opportunity to exchange cultural backgrounds and make foreign students feel welcome and at home.
In the past year they had a very successful international night. This consisted of food and fun – the buffet dinner came from many lands. Food was served from Japan, Latin America, Greece, China, Ireland, and Poland. Miss GBC sang; music was provided by the Venezuelan students; and there was a demonstration of origami.

CIRCLE K: A service organization just started this year. The main purpose is to help others who are needy, handicapped, or elderly. During the year the group visited the VA hospital, the Mary Campbell Center, helped with two mailings for the Kidney Foundation, and raised money for Project Concern. Social activities included attending a Circle K Convention in Fredericksburg, Virginia; having a barbecue to meet other clubs; holding a Charter Night; attending a divisional dinner and dance in Newark; and attending a convention in Georgia. Circle K is a Club designed to help others as well as have fun. It is an international organization, so the opportunity to meet members from all over the U.S. is great. They work closely with local groups’ from other colleges. Sponsors of circle K are the Kiwanis International. They help out financially when members attend conventions, and help when needed with projects.
OMEGA EPSILON ALPHA (Office Education Association): a co-ed business organization that serves the community and college. Members make friendships which last forever, and they need not undergo the challenges of pledging. OEO participates in many school activities such as picnics, dances, and parties. Members also attend state, local, and national conventions. At last year’s State Convention, members participated in various business contests and won the most awards of all participants. Joining this organization helps develop competent and aggressive business leaders. They encourage scholarship and school loyalty.

INTER-RESIDENCE
The Inter-Residence Hall Council (IRHC) was formed especially for resident students. They have planned many activities during the year – these include community projects such as Halloween party for orphaned children; study breaks; and annual barbecues. They also provide a forum to discuss situations which arise in the resident halls. Residents have the opportunity to meet the other students who live in the dorms. Meetings are held regularly.

Mary Morgan has had a superior role in IRHC since its formation in 1980. After successfully running for president, she worked on establishing the functions of this new organization. She saw to it that the organization was chartered after the by-laws were written; and the spirit of service and philosophy of the IRHC has largely been hers. Mary’s leadership has been strong and genuine, and the campus residents have been grateful for that leadership.

SPORTS AT GBC
A variety of sports at Goldey Beacom --- intramurals include volleyball, softball, bowling, and some more passive games such as chess. Other sports are more competitive: student teams competed in softball, volleyball, golf, and basketball.

GRADUATION – JUNE 12, 1982
Graduation exercises were held on June 12, 1982, in the Dickinson High School auditorium on Milltown Road. Commencement began with an organ recital by Marc Cheban of St. Andrew’s School. This was also an occasion for the singing of our new “Alma Mater.” Other music was provided by the Music Makers graduates of 1982 – Barbara Buckwalter, Mary Morgan, Chris Maccarone, Robin Lewis, and Tracy Walls.
The guest speaker was Dr. Anthony Campolo, professor at Eastern College in St. Davids, Pennsylvania. Even though some of the audience had heard him before it was a pleasure to hear him again.
The first Jane E. DeGrange Award was given to Tracy Walls; Marianne Hoffman and Maureen Hoffman were jointly given the Fulmer Leadership Award; Penny Bowman, the William Cleaver Lewis Memorial Award; Chuck Mayer, the Miller Award; Robin Lewis, the Roth Award; and Corinna DeMonic, the Dr. Edith Incababian Award. Typewriting and Athletic and Academic Achievement Award to Holly Wentzel; Olsten’s Award to Rita Carenvale; and the Olsten’s Word Processing Award to Gloria Lankford.

Young alumni such as you often ask what they can do to help their alma mater. Typically, they feel they cannot make significant contributions, financial or otherwise, because of being involved in launching a career. There are, however, many ways in which you can actively help your college – most of these ways have little to do with age or finances.
Why young alumni? You are closer to the college experience and its problems than older alumni, yet you are far enough removed to give us a better perspective than current undergraduates. You are in a good position to devote time and energy to your alma mater. How?
You Should have strong views on the success or failure of your college education, and these views should be fed back to us.
Keep us informed of your latest business and civic activities – our current students need a touch of the REAL world, and you can be our liaison between the working world and the academic world.
Read your copy of REFLECTIONS, the alumni newsletter, very thoroughly. It’s your main source of information on current campus news, alumni projects, trips, and special events.
Keep our college prominent in your own biographies. The more people who become aware of your successes are related to your alma mater, the more successful we all become.

The 1981-82 school year was a busy and successful one for Goldey-Beacom College. In September a volleyball tournament was held – this earned a great $1200 for the Kidney Foundation of Delaware. The First Pilot Club Scholarship was awarded; this scholarship went to a student who was returning to school after an absence of several years. September also saw the annual Welcome Dance held at the Aetna Fire Hall. Monthly dances are held there and they were always well attended, as well as the fraternity dances. In October we enjoyed the Annual Masquerade Dance. There was lots of variety in costumes and, as usual, it was hard to pick a winner. A new club, Circle K, was formed; they had a very big and successful year. Another new organization was the Council of Presidents headed by Norman Marlin. The Inter-Residence Hall Council became very active – they organized big brother and big sister parties.
In November, one big activity was the Hay Rude to New Castle. Another big event was the ground breaking for the new Skills Center; this wing has now been completed and will be computer center, study skills center, and word processing center, in addition to some regular classrooms and offices.
The First Christmas Bazaar was held at the beginning of December. This was also a very successful event. There were lots of handmade items, plus food.
Our big day in February was Dean DeGrange Day sponsored by the Student Government Association. It was a happy day but also very sad since it meant that a very well-liked Dean was leaving. Stacy announced that Student Government was going to sponsor a Jane DeGrange graduation award – the first recipient of this award was Tracy Walls.
New management under Web Bell improved the snack bar tremendously. They offer lots of specials for the students and try to please.
The usual trips to New York, Williamsburg, and such places as the Reading Outlet Stores, but the most successful trip of the year was the one to Hawaii – more than 140 people flew out to Oahu for the 8-day trip during the Spring Break. Also, three busloads off GBC’ers went to Atlantic City – most left some of their money behind.
Pageant Boosters initiated a monthly contest to provide more scholarship money for the contestants. Stacia Cropper became our new Miss GBC – a worthy successor to last year’s Sara Masonheimer. Stacia placed second in the Miss Delaware Contest in June, and another student – Carol Wakefield – placed third.
The year also saw the annual successful OEA Dance Marathon, trips to Washington, D.C. and to Hershey Park. Resident housing was full, and some students were lodged in off-campus housing. Resident aides and resident assistant programs were begun. Also, Admissions Associates, a scholarship program, was started with a group of four.
Goldey was proud of Amanda (Mandy) McFadden when she was recognized as Deaf Women of the Year. Many well deserves recognition for her successes. Also, Music Makers, with the help of other organizations, donated a piano to the school.
The year was busy and ended in June with almost 300 graduates.
