FACES OF GOLDEY BEACOM

The spirit of GBC is in the people who make up the College – students, faculty, staff, and administration. At Christmas time, there was lots of partying. Good fellowship and doing for others was at the top of most people’s lists. Student Government gave a party for New Castle County children; they invited Santa Claus to attend. Of course, he accepted with pleasure. Stacia Cropper and Lisa Brandt were his helpers, while Gloria Schrowder sat on Santa’s lap and told him exactly what she wanted for Christmas – do you think she got her wish? Anita Menaldi was one of the shoppers at our very successful Christmas Bazaar – a time to choose lots of beautiful homemade items. The maintenance people who are usually so busy took a few minutes out to attend the GBC faculty and staff Christmas party. At the same party, Mrs. Zawislak is listening intently – planning her next interview? As you can see, at this same party the food line was a busy place. Sal Onesi is in his usual good form. Robert is probably typing the weekly activity sheet – he may not be another Cortez Peters, but he tries. The games are almost always in use as students such as Greg Altemus keep themselves entertained. Of course, after every affair someone always has to do the cleaning up – Kerry Parrish is doing it with a smile. There are lots of interesting people at Goldey Beacom College.

Academics at GBC

ACADEMICS AT GBC

The spirit of Goldey Beacom College is exemplified by its continually striving for academic excellence. Although activities are important for a well-rounded individual, the most important role the student plays is that of being a student. The students know how much there is to learn; they know that it means listening well in the classroom and they know that it means always being prepared for classwork and tests. Of course, academic excellence involved much more than attending class. GBC has an excellent library, with librarians who are always prepared to help and explain to students what is available and where they can find what they need. Some of the lab classes take up a great deal of time – Pamela Taggart is working on a WANG word processing system; Tracy Walls is studying for a test. Winnie Walker liked the special courses she took so much that she is now enrolled in a degree program. Mary Brzozka, with lots of hard work and effort, has almost made it to her associate degree. Michelle Kahl and Jamie DeLong are happy, we expect, because the new semester has started so they can now get down to serious studying. Michelle Thomure is trying to decide what the dictator is saying as she works on machine transcription. Angie, of course, is waiting for her next work assignment. Chris Higgins, working in the library, is helping Jay Pevar; Mary is studying in the dorms. Rhonda is probably glad that she will be graduating in June. Academics is top priority at GBC; its graduates reflect that priority.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

To Our 1983 Graduates:

We feel very fortunate to have shared this important time of your life. While our role has been that of teacher, you must realize that the process is indeed reciprocal. Considering that our students have an unparalleled seriousness of purpose, you have helped us to fulfill our professional ambitions – for that and for the many other experiences, we are truly grateful.

You have achieved in a very demanding curriculum – we know! While we suppose things could have been easier, your preparation for the advancement in your career took priority. Obviously your learning did not begin at Goldey Beacom College nor should it end now. We hope we have had the positive impact that will encourage you to continue – to continue your formal education here or elsewhere and to continue your association with Goldey Beacom College through our Alumni activities.

Our best regards for your personal happiness.

Viola Coleman, Admission Receptionist.

Our cheerful receptionist, Viola Coleman, has been greeting visitors for the past two years. Viola started attending Goldey in one of the special programs. When an opening was available for a receptionist, Viola was interviewed and selected for the job. It seems that Both Golden and Viola made a good choice.
A Wilmington native, Viola has lots of interests. She enjoys church fellowship, roller skating, softball, cooking desserts, horseback riding, meeting people, and just going places. Along with taking care of a ten-year-old son, Viola is also taking courses toward a Data Entry Certificate – she would eventually like to expand that to a degree in business information systems. In her dreams, though, she would like to escape to a tropical island and become a missionary.

Page 21

Sam Dali
Admissions Officer

Although he has only been in Admissions Officer (full time) for the past two years, Sam Dali was known to our Evening Division students since he taught on a part-time basis for six years. His bachelor’s degree is in sociology, so his evening school teaching was in sociology and psychology. Before coming to GBC, Sam worked in Maryland public schools for twelve years and did graduate work in educational administration, plus earning a master’s degree in psychology at Washington College in Pennsylvania.
Sam and his wife are originally from Syracuse, New York, although they have lived in Delaware since 1968. They live with their son and daughter in the New Castle area.
GBC staff, students, and faculty have been enjoying the sound of “Them Guysx” at some of our recent college functions. This is Sam’s major outside interest, since he really enjoys music and has played the drums since age 7. His philosophy of life is to try to achieve satisfaction in whatever he does.

Emily S. Jackson
Business Office

Emily Jackson, currently Director of Computer Operations/Payroll/Information Systems, started working for GBC when she graduated from the college with an executive secretarial degree in 1974. Before graduation, Emily began working for Miss Abel in the academic area. She immediately began attending classes working toward an additional degree in accounting. In November 1977, Emily transferred to the Business Office and began pursuing a degree in business information systems. She also acquired a certificate from the University of Delaware in computer technology. She plans to complete work toward her B.S. in December of this year.
Originally a native of Maryland, Emily became actively involved in Goldey Beacom as soon as she began attending school. She was a member of ZETA while in school, and became an assistant residence director upon graduation. One major accomplishment of Emily’s was initiating the school yearbook. Emily put much time and effort into the groundwork and succeeding in successfully beginning the publication of our annual “Key.” Recently she has worked with the Data Processing Management Association. She even finds time to do some sewing, cooking, and work with the finance committee of the Skyline Methodist Church. Emily is married to Stewart Jackson of the Alumni Association.

Mark Mankin
Coordinator in Student Life

At the beginning of the year when a new coordinator in student life was needed, GBC was fortunate that Mark Mankin was available. He has been kept busy working with residents, planning trips and activities, teaching part-time, and – of course – pursuing his favorite hobby EATING!!
Mark is a Delaware native, born in Wilmington and raised in Newark. He is a graduate of Newark High School. From there he attended the University of Delaware, receiving a bachelor’s degree in political science. Then he went on to a master’s degree at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. Since graduating, Mark has worked for the University of Delaware in the Office of Residence & Housing Life; and taught part-time at Del Tech, Terry Campus in Dover.
On honor’s Day in May, Mark personally donated and awarded a scholarship for 83-84 to an outstanding marketing student. He hopes eventually to teach marketing on a full-time basis.
Mark Mankin has been a welcome addition to the GBC faculty and staff.

Catherine Raker
Assistant Dean

Actively involved in getting our students into the job market is Cathy Raker, Assistant Dean/Director of Career Development and Placement. She knows the college well, having served as a teacher of typewriting, shorthand, English, and accounting in the early ‘60s. She left for a few years to raise a family – three sons and a daughter – but came back to GBC in 1975 in a dual capacity, teacher and coordinator for cooperative education. In 1979 Cathy chose to work full time in placement, beginning as Acting Director of Career Development and Placement.
A native of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, Cathy received her bachelor’s degree from College Misericordia; in 1983 she earned her master’s in Higher Education Counseling from West Chester University in Pennsylvania.
Cathy is actively involved in organizations. She was recently elected President-elect of the Delaware College Personnel Association. She is also advisor to the International Student Association at GBC. She enjoys traveling, reading, sports, swimming, and water skiing.
In the future Cathy would like to see a Career Center with an expanded career library and computerized career program. Her immediate goal is to make all students aware of the opportunities the Placement Office provides for both part-time and full-time placement.

Susan Zawislak
Director of Admissions

Susan Zawislak, Assistant Dean and Director of Admissions, has a wide range of experience of many phases of businesses. She has recently been inducted into the Phi Delta Kappa Educational Society; and she is actively involved in the Delaware College Personnel Associates and the Delaware Personnel and Guidance Association. Before coming to Goldey Beacom in 1978, Susan worked with the Technical School Placement Department motivating students in finding jobs and helping them to prepare resumes. Prior to that she had worked with high school students in the guidance office of Marple Newton High School; she realized then that she wanted to work with students on the college master’s degrees from West Chester University in Pennsylvania.
Although her job in Admissions keeps her stepping, Susan still finds time to job, work on arts and crafts, and do some aerobic dancing. She also is advisor to Alpha Iota Sorority, and feels that she really gets to know the students well working with them on that level. Of course, there is always time for husband Mark and the dog.

William G. Ott

After a brief retirement, former President William G. Ott returned to teaching in the Evening School on a part-time basis. An acknowledged expert in the field of business law, were pleased that he is still contributing his expertise to GBC’s undergraduates.
A man of many talents and interests, Mr. Ott has had several different careers. He has worked in the construction field, managed the DORCHESTER NEWS on Maryland’s Eastern shore, worked in a cannery, and worked in a variety of jobs at GBC before achieving his ultimate goal of becoming President of the College. His first job with the College was working with publications. From there he went into teaching business machines; after earning his law degree, he began teaching business law.
Even with his still busy schedule, Mr. Ott finds time to play the saxophone in a local dance and the violin in a string band. On nice days you may find him riding his motorcycles.

Young Hines
Evening School Counselor

Meet our Evening School Counselor, Young Hines, who has been serving GBC’s Evening School students since 1975. During day-time hours, he works with the students at Hodgson Vocational School. Young Hines is a very busy man – in addition to his counseling work, he is active in the Army Reserve, putting in one weekend a month and two weeks in the summer. He also is currently working on an administrative certificate. In his “spare” time, he likes to jog and attend athletic activities, plus being active in church-related activities.
Young originally hails from Alabama, where he attended the State University. He received his master’s degree in counseling and his undergraduate degree in physical ed from that University. Since then, he has also acquired 39 additional graduate credits. After graduating, he served for four years on active service in the U.S. Army – part of that was in Korea during Korean War. Then he found his way to Delaware where he began in the public school system. He is married and has one daughter.

Patsy Perry came to Goldey Beacom in 1980 as an adjunct instructor in the Special Academic Programs from the position of business education instructor at Mt. Pleasant Jr. High School in Wilmington. Pat enjoyed working with the students – she re-established the cheering squad after it had been inactive for six years and opened and managed the school store. She also worked as an executive secretary.
The Perrys located in this area in 1977, coming from East Texas, although Patsy is originally a native of South Carolina. She is a graduate of Durham College in North Carolina, Benedict College in South Carolina, and has a Master’s from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.
The mother of two children, Dorian 6 years old and an infant Danika, Pat spends most of her free time with them. When time permits, she enjoys anything physical, from jogging to hiking.

Her biography has appeared in over a dozen WHO’S WHO volumes in the Unites States and in foreign countries. This year she is the proud author of a textbook in mathematics.
Tina, a native Philadelphian, received her early education in public schools in Philadelphia and nearby Yeadon. Her later education enabled her to earn a bachelor’s degree with concentration in mathematics from Immaculata College and a master’s degree in mathematics from Villanova University. She also received a master of science in mathematics education and master’s equivalency in computer science from the University of Pennsylvania. Mrs. Baker is a Ph.D. candidate with specialty in measurement, evaluation, and research, for spring 1984.
Happily married, she lives with her husband, Harold and Siberian Husky Pepper, in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania. Her hobbies include following Philadelphia sports team and playing the saxophone.

Page 35

Top Left Picture: William E. & Elizabeth G. Davis.

Betty and Bill Davis came to Goldey Beacom in 1981 with a great deal of expertise in information systems. Bill started working with computers in their infancy in 1954, and although Betty may not have been in the field quite as long, she has easily made up for lost time with the tremendous knowledge she has acquired in the computer area. Both Davises worked for the U. of D. in various capacities before coming to Goldey.
The Davises spent 8 interesting years – from 1972 to 1980 – in New Zealand working at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch teaching and working in the computer center. After computers, they enjoy their grandchildren and gardening. Both Davises like to read for recreation.
The Davises have made a real contribution to Goldey in helping to make the Computer Lab a well-run operation.

Marsha went on to earn her M.A at Bryn Mawr, and is presently a candidate affairs, serving on the Board of Directors of the Camelot Boys Home. Marsha is also advisor to Alpha Chi at Goldey and in that capacity contributes many volunteer hours. Outside interests include antique porcelain and folklore. Marsha and husband Joe have one daughter, Alison, who presently attends kindergarten. Marsha is a Delaware native who still lives in the same area of Brandywine Hundred in which she was brought up.

Page 39

Connie Vattilana

Connie Vattilana came to Goldey recently from the University of Delaware where she had worked in their Learning Resource Lab. This experience has helped Connie make a real contribution toward the successful operation of Goldey’s Learning Resource Center under the direction of Roxine MacDonald. Connie earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of Delaware in the field of reading.
Connie lives in the Hockessin area with her husband and children. If you notice a very slight accent, it is because Connie is originally from Italy.

The 1982-1983 year was another successful one for Student Government. They contributed greatly (in both money and time) to a successful graduation on campus; organized and donated furniture for the Carol Patrick Conference Room; sponsored the annual Apple Day, canned food drive, Christmas parties; Spirit Day, and contributed a stereo to the lounge. There were many other events sponsored by and contributed to by Student Government.

Spirit Day

Page 50-51

Page 50

Spirit Day

On Thursday, March 3, between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m., the annual Spirit Day was in full swing. Student Government and all other school organizations worked hard and made this another very successful even. There was lots of food – cakes, pies, potato chips, pretzels, and homemade cookies, for example. Plis free drinks. Along with eating, there was good participation in the various games. The pie eating contest was really no contest – Mark Mankin just did what comes naturally and won a car (he keeps it on top of his deck). Kim Hoepstine and Chris Piccinotti won Simons Says; and Tracy Foreman was the winner of the Hula Hoop contest. Gloria Schroeder won twice – Musical Chairs and the Orange and Nylon contests. Glenn Clarke was also a winner in the Orange and Nylon contest.

Special thanks to Stacy Allen who did a lot of the leg work (running around collecting names and write-ups); to Donna Thompson, Chris Piccinotti, Tina Nolan, and Lisa Heckman for offering us her aerial photos.

The 1982-1983 year was another busy year. Starting in September with orientation and the annual welcome barbeque to the final farewell barbeque and graduation in June, many events happened in between. These was a trip to Hershey Park, Honors Day, a vacation trip to St. Thomas in the Spring break time, a trip to Inner Harbor, Baltimore, with special delight at seeing the great aquarium. There was also a trip to Washington D.C., including a tour and dinner; a trip to Great Adventure; football and ice hockey games at the University of Delaware, and a Phillies Baseball Game. In the winter there was a Killington Ski Weekend, the Miss Noel corwning, and a trip to Ice Capades in Philadelphia. Spring time saw the crowning of Suzanne Tipton as Miss GBC and a dance was held to honor the new princess. Other events included a Lancaster Tour, visit to the Philadelphia Zoo/Art Museum, and Italian Market, and Oldies Dance, and a 76ers Basketball Game. Of course, many of the organizations also sponsored other events such as the OEA Dance Marthon at which they raised money for muscular dystrophy; the Big Brother/Big Sister Olympics; a benfit to raise money for the kidney foundation, and International Week sponsored by the International Students Association.

As usual, GBC students were offered many activities from which to choose. Those who attended and took advantage of these were the winners.

A Message To Alumni

You are now an alumna/alumnus of the College and we are delighted to welcome you to the Goldey Beacom College Alumni Association, which has a membership of over 10,000.

Young alumni such as you often ask what they can do to help their alma mater. Typically, they feel they cannot make significant contributions – financial or otherwise – because of being incolced in launching a career. There are, however, many ways in which you can actively help your college – most of these ways have little to do with age or finances.

How can young alumni contribute? You are closer to the college experience and its problems than older alumni, yet you are far enough removed to give us a better perspective than current undergraduates. You are in a good position to devote time and energy to your alma mater. How>

1.         You should have strong views on the success of failure of your college education, and these views should be fed back to us.

2.         Keep us informed of your latest business and civic activities – our current students need a touch of the REAL world, and you can be our liaison between the working world and the academic world.

3.         Read your copy of REFLECTIONS, the alumni newsletter, very thoroughly. It’s your main source of information on current campus news, alumni projects, trips, and special events.

4.         Keep our College prominent in your own biographies. The more people who become aware of your success as related to your alma mater, the more successful we all become; and a successful college can only increase the value and meaning of your certificate, diploma, or degree.

You are not automatically a member of our association, joining over 10,000 others who have passed this way before you; and you are a welcome addition. There are no dues or fees; membership is free. All we ask is that you keep in touch and let us know of your progress.

CONGRATULATIONS AND BEST WISHES FOR YOUR FUTURE
